Two Scholarly Translations by Mukhtar Siddiqui: Research and Analysis

Abstract

Mukhtar Siddiqui, even though famous for being a poet, wrote radio plays, essays on history and literary criticism as well. None the less, the literary world remained unaware of his creative and academic translations. In this paper, two of his translations have been analysed to foreground not only their importance but also Mukhtar Siddiqui's contribution to literature. In the 20th century, the pace of Urdu translations became more rapid and our writers participated in it. Mukhtar Siddiqui as a poet holds an important position in modern Urdu poetry. His awareness of the political, social and international movements of his time distinguishes his poetry among the poets of Arbab-e-Zauq circle; Besides, his interest in music and ragas gives his poems a different dimension.
