The Analytical Study of Modern Marsiya Writing in the Context of Nafas-e-Mutmainnah
Abstract
Marsiya writing is a popular genre in Urdu literature, originating from the Arabic word "Ritha," meaning lamentation over the deceased. In literary terms, it refers to poetry expressing sorrow and reverence for Imam Hussein's martyrdom at Karbala. The foundation of Marsiya was laid in Dakan (Deccan), but it was Mir Anis and Mirza Dabeer who elevated it to new heights. They introduced elements like scene-setting, emotional expression, character portrayal, and event narration, making the genre captivating.Josh Malihabadi's Marsiya, "Awaz-e-Haq," marked the beginning of modern Marsiya writing in Urdu. Josh's approach was revolutionary, and his style influenced many poets. He introduced new themes, including revolution, the message of Karbala, and contemporary issues.Notable modern Marsiya poets include Syed Ali Raza, Naseem Amrohvi, Jameel Mazhari, Najm Aafari, Shahid Hassan Naqvi, and others. These poets have effectively highlighted the atrocities inflicted upon the Ahl-e-Bait (Prophet's family) in Karbala. This article analyzes Shahid Naqvi's first Marsiya collection, "Nafas-e-Mutmainnah." The collection comprises eight Marsiyas, exploring themes like sacrifice, Imamate, Quran, and human relationships.
