A Study of the Language of Damodar Dass Khatri's Heer
Abstract
Language is also considered a medium of expression. Punjabi storytellers used the language of their time in their stories. The Punjabi storytellers created the language of their narratives in a popular style because they knew that if they used complicated or foreign phrases and idioms, the common readers and listeners would be disconnected from their thoughts. Additionally, they understood that their mother tongue, Punjabi, was deeply rooted in the land of five rivers, and serving the language of their parents and grandparents was a form of immortality. For this reason, they used pure Punjabi idioms, phrases, metaphors, and similes, which were rooted in Punjabi life. These elements made their stories relatable and accessible to the people. Similarly, Damodar Das Khattri also used a unique and sweet language in his story of Heer Ranjha, which reflects the simplicity and beauty of the Punjabi language. This article will discuss the language and style of his work in detail.
