Abstract

The short stories of Muhammad Mansha Yaad reflect a unique synthesis of modern symbolic techniques and deep-rooted social consciousness. This study explores how his modern symbolic fiction remains closely tied to the local social fabric, portraying the lived realities, cultural traditions, and psychological complexities of the common people in Punjabi and broader South Asian society. While employing modernist and symbolic narrative structures, Mansha Yaad does not detach his fiction from the local milieu; instead, his symbols are often drawn from indigenous life, landscapes, and experiences. The research highlights how his character’s grapple with issues such as poverty, feudal oppression, gender dynamics, migration, and identity crises—issues that are both regionally specific and universally resonant. Through a critical examination of selected short stories, the paper reveals that Mansha Yaad's symbolic storytelling serves not only as a literary innovation but also as a vehicle for social commentary and cultural preservation. His fiction becomes a mirror of society where symbolism is not abstracted from reality but is deeply embedded within it, making his work a significant contribution to modern Urdu short story writing.
